Imani has facilitated workshops in schools and universities across the country, often preceding a performance or poetry reading. Imani is uniquely experienced in building age-appropriate workshops, lesson plans and long term curricula specifically designed for the needs her students as well as the themes and objectives of the institution. She was recently asked by the JRAP program, a 1.4 million dollar arts integration initiative for the San Francisco Unified School District to create professional development trainings for classroom teachers as part of an initiative to integrate the arts into California middle schools.
Whether in a school classroom or community center, Imani is a vibrant teacher and workshop facilitator who has formalized what she's learned outside of the institution to share universal skills necessary to succeed in all facets of life including public speaking, creative writing and how to make sense of figurative language. Imani's approach is informed by the oral tradition of Spoken Word poetry. Outcomes are primarily guided by questions like "How are performance poets expanding an understanding of literature?" and "What can performance poets teach us about our identities?"
